Does Carbon Content Matter in a Field Hockey Stick?
Yes, carbon content matters, and it's the single biggest factor in how a hockey stick performs. A low carbon percentage (roughly 0-30%) gives a softer, more forgiving stick that suits beginners and improvers. A mid-range percentage (30-60%) balances power with control for club and school players. A high carbon percentage (60% and above) produces a stiff, powerful stick built for strong, technically confident players and specialist drag-flickers. Buying more carbon than your game needs doesn't make you better; it usually just makes the stick harder to control.
What carbon actually does to a stick
Carbon fibre is added to the fibreglass and resin layers that make up a composite hockey stick's shaft. The more carbon in the layup, the stiffer and lighter the stick becomes. Stiffness matters because it changes how much the stick flexes on contact with the ball: a flexible, low-carbon stick absorbs some of the impact and "gives" a little, while a stiff, high-carbon stick barely flexes at all and transfers almost all of that energy straight back into the ball, and into your hands and wrists.
That's why carbon content isn't really a quality scale from low to high. It's a suitability scale. A 10% carbon stick isn't a cheaper, worse version of a 90% carbon stick; it's a different tool, built for a different level of technique.
How much carbon do you actually need?
We think in four rough bands when we're advising customers in our shops or over the phone:
- 0-30% carbon (fibreglass composite): junior and beginner sticks, often from ranges like Mercian's entry-level lines or Grays' lower-numbered models. Forgiving, durable, and cheap to replace as a child grows or a beginner's technique develops.
- 30-60% carbon (mid composite): the sensible default for most adult club and school players. You get a noticeable step up in power and rebound over a low-carbon stick without losing so much control that mishits punish you. Many mid-tier sticks from Grays, Adidas, TK Hockey and Y1 Hockey sit in this band.
- 60-80% carbon: for players with settled technique who play regularly at a competitive level and want more power on the push, hit and slap without going fully stiff.
- 80-100% carbon: elite and specialist territory, including most serious drag-flicking sticks from brands like Y1, Adidas, Grays, Ritual and Osaka's higher-end ranges. These reward precise technique and strong wrists; they don't compensate for weaker ones.
The trade-off: power versus control
Every extra percentage point of carbon buys you more ball speed and a crisper feel on a clean hit, and costs you a little forgiveness on a mishit. For a player still developing their first touch, aerial skills or reverse-stick control, that trade-off works against them: a stiff stick exaggerates the sting of a bad connection rather than smoothing it over. This is the single most common mismatch we see: players buying a stick that's stiffer than their game currently needs, then finding it harsh on the hands and unforgiving in tight play, before moving down a carbon band and getting on far better with it.
What our sales figures tell us
Storewide, half of everything we sell falls between £100 and £200, with the middle of the market sitting around £150. Sticks are one of our pricier categories, and carbon content is the main reason a stick sits at the bottom or the top of that spread: a 20% carbon junior stick and a 90% carbon senior pro stick can differ in price by several hundred pounds even though they're both, technically, "hockey sticks." Most of our customers are club, school and social players, and for that group a well-made mid-carbon stick, rather than the most expensive stick in the range, is usually the better and more comfortable purchase.
How to choose in practice
- New to the game or buying for a junior: choose 0-30% carbon for durability and forgiveness.
- Play club or school hockey regularly, established technique: choose 30-60% carbon for a genuine step up in power without losing control.
- Play competitively, comfortable striking the ball cleanly and consistently: consider 60-80% carbon.
- Drag-flicking specialist or playing at a high representative level: 80%+ carbon, chosen with the stiffness and flex point suited to your flick technique.
If in doubt, buy one carbon band lower than you think you need. It's easier to grow into a stiffer stick next season than to play through a year with one that's fighting your hands.
